World Spine Day: Five Daily Habits for a Healthier Spine

Published October 16th, 2026 by Camarata Chiropractic

Today, October 16, is World Spine Day.

It is a global effort to raise awareness about spinal health, and it is an issue that affects nearly everyone. Back pain is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, and most adults will deal with it at some point in their lives.

Your spine does far more than hold you up. It protects your spinal cord, the main highway between your brain and the rest of your body. It lets you bend, twist, and move. It absorbs force with every step.

You only get one. Here are five daily habits that help you take care of it.

Habit #1: Move Every Day, and Often

Your spine loves movement.

The discs between your vertebrae do not have a direct blood supply the way muscles do. They rely on movement to help circulate fluid and nutrients. The joints of your spine stay healthier when they move through their range regularly.

That means two things:

  • Daily activity. Walking is one of the best things you can do for your spine. Aim to build toward 7,000 to 10,000 steps a day if you are able.
  • Frequent position changes. Break up sitting every 30 to 60 minutes. Stand, walk, stretch, reach overhead.

Your best posture is your next posture.

Habit #2: Build a Strong Core and Hips

Your core is not just your abs. It is the whole system of muscles that stabilize your spine, including your deep abdominals, back muscles, diaphragm, pelvic floor, and glutes.

A strong, coordinated core spreads load across your spine and protects it during everyday tasks like lifting, carrying, and twisting.

Great spine-friendly exercises include:

  • Bird dogs
  • Dead bugs
  • Side planks
  • Glute bridges
  • Farmer carries
  • Hip hinges, learning to bend from the hips instead of the low back

Habit #3: Lift Smart

You do not need to be afraid of lifting. Your spine is built to bend and carry. The key is preparing it and building up gradually.

  • Keep the load close to your body
  • Hinge at the hips and use your legs
  • Brace your core before you lift
  • Avoid twisting while lifting something heavy; turn with your feet instead
  • Get help with awkward or very heavy objects

Habit #4: Protect Your Sleep

Sleep is when your body repairs itself, and your spine is no exception. Poor sleep is also linked with higher pain sensitivity.

  • Side sleepers: use a pillow that keeps your head level with your spine, and a pillow between your knees
  • Back sleepers: try a pillow under your knees
  • Stomach sleeping tends to twist the neck, so it is worth trying to transition if you can
  • A mattress that supports you without sagging matters
  • Aim for seven to nine hours

Habit #5: Mind the Screens

The average person spends hours a day looking down at a phone. Every degree your head tilts forward increases the load on your neck. Over time, that adds up.

  • Bring your phone up toward eye level instead of dropping your head
  • Set your computer monitor at eye level, about an arm's length away
  • Take regular screen breaks and roll your shoulders back
  • Do a few chin tucks throughout the day

Bonus: Get Checked Before It Hurts

Most people only think about their spine when it hurts. But joints can stiffen and movement can deteriorate long before pain shows up.

At Camarata Chiropractic & Wellness, we evaluate how your spine is moving and functioning, not just where it hurts. Our care includes:

  • Chiropractic adjustments to restore joint motion and support nervous system function
  • Home exercises tailored to your body and goals
  • SoftWave Therapy for stubborn spinal and soft tissue problems
  • Full-body Red Light Therapy for recovery and wellness
  • Care for every age, from pregnancy and infancy through the senior years

Spine Warning Signs That Need Prompt Attention

  • Numbness in the groin or inner thighs
  • New bladder or bowel changes
  • Progressive weakness in the legs or arms
  • Back pain with fever or unexplained weight loss
  • Severe pain after a fall or accident

These require immediate medical evaluation.

Common Questions

When should my child start getting spinal checkups?

Kids can be checked at any age, from infancy on. Big milestones like learning to walk, starting sports, and growth spurts are especially good times.

Is it normal for my back to crack when I move?

Painless joint sounds are usually harmless. If cracking comes with pain, swelling, or locking, get it checked.

Can good habits replace chiropractic care?

Habits are the foundation, and they matter most. Chiropractic care supports them by keeping joints moving well, especially when life adds stress your habits cannot fully offset.

Does sitting with my legs crossed hurt my spine?

Occasionally crossing your legs is fine. The bigger issue is staying in any one position for too long. Change positions and get up regularly.

Is it okay to sleep on my stomach?

It is not ideal because it forces your neck to stay turned. If you can, gradually transition to side or back sleeping.

Small Habits, Big Results

A healthy spine is not built in a day. It is built by small habits repeated consistently: moving, strengthening, sleeping well, and paying attention before problems become painful.
