Red Light Therapy for Knee Pain: Supporting the Joints That Carry You

Published October 13th, 2026 by Camarata Chiropractic

Your knees take more abuse than almost any other joint in your body.

Walking on level ground puts forces of around one to one and a half times your body weight through each knee. Climbing stairs can push that to three times your body weight or more. Squatting, running, and jumping go higher still.

Multiply that by thousands of steps a day, for decades, and it is no wonder knee pain is one of the most common complaints we see.

Red Light Therapy has become a popular tool for knee comfort, and for good reason. Here is what it can and cannot do.

Common Causes of Knee Pain

  • Osteoarthritis, where cartilage wears down over time
  • Patellofemoral pain, the ache around or behind the kneecap common in runners and active teens
  • Tendon problems, like patellar tendinopathy or pes anserine pain on the inside of the knee
  • Old injuries to ligaments or the meniscus
  • Mechanical stress from stiff hips, weak glutes, or poor ankle mobility

Most chronic knee pain involves several of these at once.

What Red Light Therapy Does

Red Light Therapy, or photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light that interact with your cells, particularly the mitochondria that produce cellular energy.

For joints like the knee, research on photobiomodulation has looked at effects on:

  • Inflammation, helping modulate inflammatory activity in and around the joint
  • Circulation, supporting blood flow to the tissues around the knee
  • Cellular energy, giving the cells of cartilage, tendons, and surrounding tissue more resources
  • Pain and stiffness, with many studies on knee osteoarthritis reporting improvements

The near-infrared wavelengths, 850nm and 940nm on our Trifecta Pro 450, penetrate deeper into tissue, which matters for a joint as thick as the knee.

Why Full Body Helps Knees

Knees are rarely the only problem. A stiff hip, an arthritic ankle, or a sore low back all change how the knee is loaded.

Our Trifecta Pro 450 treats your whole body at once in about 12 minutes, so both knees, both hips, and your back all get attention in the same session. Many people with knee pain are surprised by how much better everything feels, not just the knee.

What Red Light Cannot Do

I want to be honest here. Red Light Therapy will not regrow cartilage that is gone, realign a knee, or replace the need to strengthen the muscles that protect the joint.

Think of it as a way to support the environment the knee lives in, so the other parts of your plan work better.

The Plan That Helps Knees Most

Strength. Strong quads, hamstrings, glutes, and calves are the knee's best protection. For arthritic knees, strengthening is one of the most well-supported treatments there is.

Movement. Joints are nourished by motion. Walking, cycling, and swimming keep knees healthier than rest.

Chiropractic care. Restoring motion in the hips, ankles, pelvis, and low back changes how force travels through the knee.

Weight management. Every extra pound adds several pounds of force through the knee when you climb stairs.

Red Light Therapy. Supports recovery, circulation, and comfort.

SoftWave Therapy. For specific tendon problems or stubborn knee pain, SoftWave is a focused, FDA-cleared option we may add.

A Simple Routine to Start

  • Three to five Red Light sessions per week for the first several weeks
  • Daily walking, building gradually
  • Strength exercises two to three times per week, such as sit-to-stands, step-ups, bridges, and wall sits
  • Track your stiffness and pain each morning so you can see progress

What Patients Often Tell Us

Results vary, and we never promise a specific outcome. But knee pain patients using Red Light Therapy regularly commonly report less morning stiffness, easier stairs, and feeling more comfortable during their exercises, which makes it easier to stay consistent with the strength work that matters most.

When Knee Pain Needs Prompt Evaluation

  • A knee that is hot, red, and very swollen
  • Knee pain with fever
  • Locking, catching, or giving way
  • Inability to bear weight
  • Pain after a significant twist, fall, or impact
  • Calf swelling and pain, which needs urgent medical attention

Common Questions

Is Red Light Therapy safe if I have had a knee replacement?

Many people with knee replacements use Red Light Therapy. Light does not interact with the implant the way some other treatments might, but tell us about any hardware before you start so we can confirm it is appropriate.

Should I still do my knee exercises?

Yes, absolutely. Strength work is the foundation for knee health. Light can help you feel more comfortable doing it.

Can I combine Red Light with SoftWave for my knee?

Yes. Many knee patients do. SoftWave targets specific tissue problems, while full-body light supports overall recovery.

Does weather affect knee pain?

Many people notice their knees ache more in cold, damp weather. Staying active, keeping warm, and maintaining a consistent recovery routine through the winter all help.

Will Red Light Therapy help a torn meniscus?

Light may support comfort and recovery around the knee, but a meniscus tear with locking or giving way needs a proper evaluation first.
