Fall Sports Season Prep: Keeping Young Athletes Healthy From Day One

Published August 7th, 2026 by Camarata Chiropractic

Two-a-days are starting.

Around here that means football helmets under the lights at Churchville-Chili, soccer nets going up, cross country runners logging early morning miles, and volleyball tryouts filling up the gym.

It also means a predictable wave of injuries over the next four weeks.

Not because fall sports are dangerous, but because of what happens right before them.

The Real Problem: The Summer Gap

Here is the pattern we see every single August.

A kid spends June and July at a fairly relaxed activity level. Maybe some pickup games, some swimming, a lot of screen time.

Then on day one of preseason, they go from that to two practices a day in the heat.

The jump in load is enormous, and the body has no runway to adapt.

Most preseason injuries are not freak accidents. They are the predictable result of asking an underprepared body to do a lot, very fast.

What We See Most in Preseason

  • Hamstring and hip flexor strains, especially in sprinting sports

  • Shin splints and foot pain in runners ramping mileage quickly

  • Shoulder pain in volleyball, swimming, and throwing athletes

  • Low back tightness from sudden volume increases

  • Knee pain, particularly in growing athletes

  • Ankle sprains on uneven late-summer fields

Almost all of these have something in common. They come from tissue that was not conditioned for the demand placed on it.

Growing Bodies Play by Different Rules

This deserves its own section, because parents often do not know it.

In a growing athlete, bones lengthen before the muscles and tendons catch up.

During growth spurts, kids are temporarily tighter, less coordinated, and more vulnerable at the growth plates.

That is why conditions like Osgood-Schlatter at the knee and Sever's at the heel cluster in this age group.

A teenager who grew four inches over the summer is not the same athlete who finished last season, even though they look like it in the team photo.

They need to be treated accordingly.

The Specialization Problem

We will say this gently, because we know it is a sensitive topic for competitive families.

Year-round single sport specialization increases overuse injury risk.

The same movement patterns, the same tissues, the same stresses, twelve months a year, with no offseason for tissue to recover.

Multi-sport athletes tend to develop broader movement skill and give specific tissues time to recover.

If your child plays one sport all year, be extra attentive to the warning signs below.

A Practical Preseason Checklist

1. Ramp up gradually

If practice starts in two weeks, start moving now. Even light running, bodyweight work, and sport-specific movement gives tissue a head start.

2. Hydrate seriously

August practices in this area can be brutally humid. Dehydration reduces performance, impairs recovery, and increases cramping and strain risk. Water starts the day before, not at practice.

3. Warm up properly

Not static stretching while chatting. Actual movement: light jogging, dynamic leg swings, hip openers, and progressively faster movement before going full speed.

4. Prioritize sleep

This is the single most underrated recovery tool for teenage athletes. Growth and tissue repair happen during sleep. A kid getting six hours is training at a disadvantage no supplement can fix.

5. Fuel the work

Two-a-days demand real calories and real protein. Under-fueled athletes break down instead of building up.

6. Respect rest days

Adaptation happens between sessions, not during them.

Warning Signs Worth Acting On

Athletes are conditioned to push through discomfort, which makes them unreliable narrators of their own pain.

Watch for:

  • Pain that persists beyond normal post-practice soreness

  • Limping or a changed running form

  • Pain that shows up at rest or at night

  • A joint that keeps getting stiff or swollen

  • Performance dropping for no clear reason

  • Repeatedly favoring one side

Ordinary soreness improves over a day or two. Anything that lingers, worsens, or changes how they move deserves attention.

Where Chiropractic Care Fits

Sports chiropractic is not just about treating injuries after they happen.

The bigger value is in what we find before something breaks down.

We assess how the joints are moving, where motion is restricted, whether one side is compensating for the other, and how the nervous system is coordinating it all.

A hip that does not rotate well forces the low back to make up the difference. A stiff mid-back changes how a shoulder throws. An ankle that lost motion after an old sprain changes how the knee absorbs load.

These restrictions rarely hurt on their own. They just quietly set the stage for the injury that does.

What a preseason visit typically includes

  • An assessment of spinal and extremity motion

  • Identifying restrictions and asymmetries

  • Adjustments to restore proper joint motion

  • Practical guidance on what that athlete specifically should work on

For athletes already dealing with a nagging tendon or joint issue, SoftWave Tissue Regeneration Technology gives us a drug-free option to support tissue healing directly, without the downtime that keeps kids off the field.

Play the Whole Season

Every fall we see the same thing.

The athletes who make it through the entire season are usually not the most talented ones. They are the ones who prepared, recovered, and dealt with small problems while they were still small.

Talent does not matter much from the bench.

We work with athletes and families across North Chili, Chili, Churchville, Spencerport, and the greater Rochester area, and we would be glad to get your athlete checked before the season gets going.

Have a great season out there.
