October Is National Chiropractic Health Month: What an Adjustment Actually Does

Published October 1st, 2026 by Camarata Chiropractic

October is National Chiropractic Health Month, so I want to answer the question I get asked more than any other.

"What are you actually doing when you adjust me?"

Some people imagine we are putting bones back in place. Others think we are just cracking knuckles on a bigger scale. Neither is quite right, and the real answer is a lot more interesting.

What an Adjustment Is

A chiropractic adjustment is a specific, controlled input applied to a joint that is not moving the way it should.

Notice the word "specific." We are not randomly twisting your spine. Before every adjustment, we evaluate how individual joints are moving, where motion is restricted, and how that restriction is affecting the area around it.

Then we apply a precise input, sometimes quick and sometimes gentle, to restore motion to that joint.

Joints Are Designed to Move

Your spine is made of 24 movable vertebrae, plus the sacrum and pelvis. Each one connects to its neighbors through small joints that allow you to bend, twist, and absorb force.

When those joints move well, the load of daily life is shared evenly. When one gets stuck, its neighbors have to work harder, the muscles around it guard and tighten, and the tissue starts to complain.

Restricted joints commonly come from:

  • Long hours sitting or in one position
  • Repetitive motions at work or in sports
  • Old injuries, falls, and accidents
  • Poor sleep positions
  • Stress, which keeps muscles tense
  • Simply not moving enough

The Nervous System Piece

This is the part most people have never heard explained.

Your joints and the muscles around them are loaded with sensory receptors. They constantly send information to your brain about position, movement, and load. Your brain uses that information to coordinate movement, balance, and muscle tone.

When a joint is restricted, that information changes. Research on spinal manipulation suggests an adjustment creates a burst of sensory input that can influence how the nervous system processes information from that area, which may help explain why patients often notice changes in muscle tension, movement, and pain after an adjustment.

So an adjustment is not just mechanical. It is also a conversation with your nervous system.

So What Is That Pop?

That sound is not bones cracking.

Your joints are surrounded by a capsule filled with fluid that contains dissolved gases. When a joint is separated quickly, the pressure inside the capsule drops, and a gas bubble forms or collapses. That is the pop, called a cavitation.

It is the same thing that happens when you crack your knuckles.

Here is the important part: the pop is not what makes an adjustment work. It is a side effect. Some of our most effective adjustments make no sound at all, and we use plenty of gentle, low-force techniques that never produce a pop.

Does It Hurt?

For most people, no. Many describe an adjustment as a feeling of relief or release. If an area is very sore or inflamed, you may feel some temporary tenderness, and some people feel mildly sore the next day, similar to after a workout.

We always adapt our approach to you. For kids, pregnant moms, older adults, or anyone nervous about being adjusted, we have gentler techniques that still restore motion effectively.

Why Do Some People Need More Than One Visit?

Because joints, muscles, and the nervous system adapt over time. A restriction that developed over months or years usually does not fully resolve in one visit.

Early on, visits are typically closer together to build momentum. As your body holds its changes better, visits spread out. The goal is always to get you functioning well and give you the tools to keep it that way.

What We Do Beyond the Adjustment

At Camarata Chiropractic & Wellness, an adjustment is one part of a bigger picture:

  • A thorough evaluation so we understand what is really driving your problem
  • Home exercises to build strength and mobility between visits
  • SoftWave Therapy for stubborn tendon, joint, and soft tissue problems
  • Full-body Red Light Therapy for recovery and overall wellness
  • Prenatal and pediatric care adapted for every stage of life

Our team, Dr. Sam, Dr. Brian, and Dr. Joe, works together so you get care that fits your body and your goals.

Who Should Not Be Adjusted?

Chiropractic care is safe and appropriate for most people, but not every situation calls for an adjustment. Certain conditions, like a suspected fracture, some advanced bone conditions, or certain vascular problems, require a different approach or medical care first. That is exactly why we take a detailed history and examine you before treating.

Common Questions

Is it safe to crack my own neck or back?

Occasional self-cracking is common, but repeatedly forcing your own joints can irritate them and tends to move the joints that are already loose rather than the stuck ones. If you feel the constant urge to crack, that is a sign something is not moving well and is worth having checked.

Celebrate Your Spine This Month
