Red Light Therapy for Chronic Low Back Pain: Where It Fits in Your Plan

Published September 13th, 2026 by Camarata Chiropractic

Low back pain is the number one reason people walk through our doors.

Some have had it for a week. Many have had it for years. They have tried stretching, heating pads, over-the-counter pills, maybe a few rounds of physical therapy, and they are tired of it coming back every time they bend over to unload the dishwasher.

Lately, more of them are asking about Red Light Therapy.

It is a fair question, and I want to give an honest answer: Red Light Therapy is not a magic switch for back pain. But for a lot of people, it is a genuinely useful piece of the puzzle.

Why Chronic Low Back Pain Is So Stubborn

The low back sits at the crossroads of your body. It carries the weight of everything above it and transfers force to everything below.

When back pain becomes chronic, it is usually not one thing. It is a combination:

  • Joints in the spine and pelvis that are not moving well
  • Muscles that are guarded, fatigued, or weak
  • Discs that have degenerated or been irritated
  • Low-grade inflammation that never fully resolves
  • A sensitized nervous system that has learned to protect the area
  • Lifestyle factors like long hours sitting, poor sleep, and stress

Because so many factors are involved, the best results usually come from addressing several of them at once.

What Red Light Therapy Brings to the Table

Red Light Therapy, or photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light that interact with your cells, particularly the mitochondria responsible for energy production.

For chronic back pain, research on photobiomodulation points to a few relevant effects:

  • Cellular energy. Better mitochondrial function gives tissues more resources for repair.
  • Circulation. Improved local blood flow helps deliver oxygen and nutrients and clear metabolic waste from tired tissue.
  • Inflammation. Photobiomodulation is studied for its ability to help modulate inflammatory processes.
  • Muscle recovery. Muscles that have been guarding for months are fatigued, and red light may support their recovery.
  • Relaxation. Many patients find sessions calming, which matters when stress amplifies pain.

Why Full Body Matters for Back Pain

Back pain is rarely only about the back.

Stiff hips, tight hamstrings, a locked-up mid-back, and even foot problems can all feed low back pain. Our Trifecta Pro 450 delivers four wavelengths (630nm, 660nm, 850nm, and 940nm) across your entire body in a single 12-minute session, so the hips, legs, and upper back get the same attention as the sore spot.

The near-infrared wavelengths in particular reach deeper tissues like the large muscles around the spine and pelvis.

Want to see how it feels? Read more on our Red Light Therapy page, or schedule a session online. You do not need to be a chiropractic patient to use it.

Where It Fits in a Back Pain Plan

Here is how I think about it with patients.

Chiropractic care addresses the mechanics: how your spine, pelvis, and hips are moving, and how your nervous system is communicating with the area.

Movement and strength build a back that can handle the demands of your life. This is the long-term fix, and it is non-negotiable.

Red Light Therapy supports the environment the tissue is healing in: energy, circulation, and recovery.

SoftWave Therapy may be added for specific, stubborn tissue problems, such as irritated joints or chronic muscle and tendon issues around the pelvis.

Each one does something the others do not. Together, they cover far more ground than any single approach.

What Patients Often Notice

Results vary, and I never promise a specific outcome. That said, patients using Red Light Therapy as part of a back pain plan commonly tell us they notice:

  • Less morning stiffness
  • Feeling looser after sessions
  • Better tolerance for their home exercises
  • Improved sleep
  • Faster recovery after a flare

Consistency matters. A single session is relaxing. A consistent routine is where changes tend to show up.

Daily Habits That Make It All Work Better

  • Walk daily. It is one of the best things you can do for your back.
  • Break up sitting every 30 to 60 minutes.
  • Strengthen your hips and core, not just with crunches but with bridges, carries, and hinges.
  • Protect your sleep, because poor sleep lowers pain tolerance.
  • Do your home exercises. What happens between visits matters as much as the visits.

When Back Pain Needs Prompt Evaluation

  • Numbness in the groin or inner thighs
  • New bladder or bowel changes
  • Progressive leg weakness
  • Back pain with fever or unexplained weight loss
  • Pain after a significant fall or accident

Those warrant immediate medical attention.

Common Questions

Do I need to be a chiropractic patient to use Red Light Therapy?

No. Anyone can book a Red Light session. That said, if your back pain has a mechanical driver like a stiff pelvis or restricted joints, combining light with chiropractic care usually gets better results than either one alone.

Will Red Light Therapy help a herniated disc?

Light may support the surrounding muscles and tissue environment, but it does not move or repair a disc on its own. Disc problems need a proper evaluation, and we will tell you honestly whether chiropractic care, SoftWave, or a medical referral makes the most sense.

A Better Way to Manage Back Pain

If you are stuck in the cycle of flare, rest, feel okay, and flare again, it may be time to try a more complete approach.

Red Light Therapy will not do the work for you, but as part of a plan that includes chiropractic care and smart movement, it can help you recover better and feel more like yourself.
