Red Light Therapy for Tendons and Ligaments: Supporting the Slow Healers

Published September 5th, 2026 by Camarata Chiropractic

Some injuries heal fast. A cut on your finger is gone in a week. A pulled muscle often feels better within a few weeks.

Then there are tendons and ligaments.

Sprain an ankle badly, irritate an elbow tendon, or tweak a ligament in your knee, and you may still be feeling it months later. Patients often ask me why.

The short answer is blood flow. The longer answer is where Red Light Therapy comes in.

Why Tendons and Ligaments Are Slow Healers

Tendons connect muscle to bone. Ligaments connect bone to bone. Both are made mostly of dense, tightly packed collagen that gives them incredible strength.

That density comes at a cost.

Muscle tissue is packed with blood vessels. Tendons and ligaments have far fewer. Less blood flow means less oxygen, fewer nutrients, and slower delivery of the cells responsible for repair.

Their cells are also less metabolically active than muscle cells. They simply do not turn over as quickly.

So when a tendon or ligament is injured, healing tends to be slow, and if the tissue keeps getting loaded before it has caught up, it can get stuck in a cycle of partial repair and re-irritation.

Common Slow-Healer Problems We See

  • Ankle sprains that never quite feel stable again
  • Tennis elbow and golfer's elbow
  • Achilles and patellar tendon pain in runners and jumpers
  • Rotator cuff irritation in lifters, swimmers, and overhead athletes
  • Wrist and thumb tendon pain from repetitive work
  • Knee ligament sprains in field and court sports

What Red Light Therapy Does at the Cellular Level

Red Light Therapy, also called photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light that can penetrate the skin and interact with your cells.

Inside nearly every cell are mitochondria, the structures that produce ATP, the energy currency your body uses for everything, including repair.

Research on photobiomodulation suggests that certain wavelengths of light are absorbed by components of the mitochondria and can support more efficient energy production. More cellular energy means cells have more resources available for the work of rebuilding tissue.

Red Light Therapy is also studied for its effects on:

  • Local circulation, which is exactly what poorly supplied tissue needs
  • Inflammation modulation, helping tissue move out of a chronically irritated state
  • Collagen production, the main building block of tendons and ligaments

Why Wavelength and Coverage Matter

Not all red light devices are the same.

Our Trifecta Pro 450 uses four wavelengths: 630nm and 660nm red light and 850nm and 940nm near-infrared light. The red wavelengths act more on superficial tissue, while the near-infrared wavelengths reach deeper structures like tendons, ligaments, and joints.

It is also full body. In one 12-minute session you get head-to-toe coverage, which matters because tendon and ligament problems rarely happen in isolation. The sprained ankle changes how you walk. The sore elbow changes how you use your shoulder. Treating the whole system is a better fit for how the body actually works.

What a Red Light Session Looks Like

If you have never done full-body Red Light Therapy, here is what to expect.

You lie down in the Trifecta Pro 450 in a private room, and the canopy lowers over you. The light surrounds you from above and below at the same time, so there is no flipping over halfway through.

The session runs about 12 minutes. Most people describe it as warm and relaxing, and plenty of patients tell us it is the calmest 12 minutes of their day. There is no pain, no needles, and no recovery time afterward.

Wear minimal clothing so the light can reach your skin, and remove any jewelry. Protective eyewear is provided. Then you get dressed and go on with your day.

Light Is a Support, Not a Substitute

I want to be clear about something.

Tendons and ligaments get stronger when they are loaded progressively. Light can support the environment for healing, but it does not replace the work of rebuilding strength and stability.

For a slow-healing tendon or ligament, the most effective plans usually combine several approaches:

  • Chiropractic care to restore joint motion above and below the injury so the injured tissue is not overloaded
  • Progressive strengthening tailored to the tissue and the stage of healing
  • Red Light Therapy to support cellular energy and circulation
  • SoftWave Therapy for chronic cases where the tissue is clearly stuck
  • Smart load management so you stay active without repeatedly re-irritating the area

How Often Do People Use It?

Consistency matters more than intensity with Red Light Therapy.

For an active recovery goal, many people start with several sessions per week and then scale back to maintenance as things improve. Each session is only 12 minutes, so it fits easily before work, after a workout, or around a chiropractic visit.

We will help you build a schedule that matches your goals.

When to Get an Injury Evaluated

Some tendon and ligament injuries need imaging or medical care. Get evaluated promptly if you notice:

  • A pop at the time of injury followed by rapid swelling
  • A joint that gives way or feels unstable
  • Inability to bear weight or use the limb normally
  • Significant bruising or deformity

Give Your Slow Healers Some Help

Tendons and ligaments are built to last, which is exactly why they take so long to recover.

The right combination of movement, chiropractic care, and recovery tools like Red Light Therapy can give them a better environment to heal.
