Sciatica During Pregnancy: Why It Happens and What Helps

You are lying in bed, finally comfortable, and you roll over.
Then it hits. A sharp, electric pain shooting from your buttock down the back of your leg.
If you are pregnant and this sounds familiar, you are not alone. Sciatic-type pain is one of the most common complaints we hear from expecting moms, and one of the most disruptive. It can make walking, sleeping, standing up from a chair, and getting in and out of the car genuinely miserable.
The good news is that it is usually very manageable.
What Sciatica Actually Is
Your sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in your body. It forms from nerve roots in your lower back, passes through your pelvis and deep under the muscles of your buttock, then travels down the back of each leg.
"Sciatica" describes pain, tingling, or numbness along that path, usually on one side.
In pregnancy, true disc-related sciatica is actually less common than many people assume. Much more often, the nerve is being irritated somewhere along its route through the pelvis and hip.
Why Pregnancy Sets the Stage
Pregnancy changes your body quickly, and several of those changes affect the sciatic nerve.
- Relaxin. This hormone loosens ligaments throughout your body to prepare the pelvis for birth. Looser ligaments mean less stability, especially in the sacroiliac joints where your spine meets your pelvis.
- A shifting center of gravity. As your belly grows, your posture changes. The low back arches more, the pelvis tilts, and the muscles around your hips work harder to keep you upright.
- Tight deep hip muscles. The piriformis muscle sits right on top of the sciatic nerve. When it gets tight or irritated from compensating, it can squeeze the nerve.
- Weight gain and fluid. Healthy and necessary, but they add load to the low back and pelvis.
- Baby's position. Later in pregnancy, the baby's position can add pressure in the pelvis.
Put those together and it is easy to see why the pelvis becomes the epicenter of so much discomfort.
What It Feels Like
- Sharp, shooting, or burning pain from the buttock down the back of the thigh
- Pain on one side, often worse with certain movements
- Pain when rolling over in bed, standing up, or climbing stairs
- Deep aching in the buttock or near the dimple at the back of the pelvis
- Tingling or numbness in the leg or foot
Simple Things That Help at Home
- Keep your knees together when you roll over in bed and when you get in and out of the car. Big asymmetrical movements strain the pelvis.
- Sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees, and consider one under your belly. Keeping the hips level reduces strain.
- Avoid standing on one leg to put on pants or shoes. Sit down instead.
- Take shorter strides when walking and avoid long periods of standing in one position.
- Use heat or cold, whichever feels better, on the low back or buttock for short periods.
- Stay gently active. Walking and prenatal-appropriate movement usually help more than staying still.
- Gentle stretching for the hips and glutes, within a comfortable range. Ask us which stretches are right for your stage of pregnancy.
How Prenatal Chiropractic Can Help
Because so much pregnancy sciatica comes from the pelvis and hips, addressing how those joints are moving can make a significant difference.
At Camarata Chiropractic & Wellness, prenatal care is gentle and specifically adapted for pregnancy. We use pregnancy-friendly positioning and support so you are comfortable on the table at every stage, and our adjustments are low-force and specific.
Our approach typically focuses on:
- Sacroiliac and pelvic balance so the joints move evenly and the nerve is not being irritated
- The Webster Technique, a specific prenatal chiropractic analysis and adjustment designed to support pelvic balance and function
- Soft tissue work for tight hip and gluteal muscles
- Lower back mobility to reduce compensatory stress
- Home recommendations for sleeping, sitting, and moving more comfortably
Many moms tell us the biggest change is in their sleep, which affects everything else during pregnancy.
If sciatica is making your pregnancy harder than it needs to be, we would love to help. Book a prenatal visit online here and we will build a plan around your stage of pregnancy.
Is Chiropractic Safe During Pregnancy?
This is the most common question we get, and it is a good one.
Chiropractic care adapted for pregnancy is widely used and generally considered safe for healthy pregnancies. Our team adjusts techniques for each trimester and coordinates with your OB or midwife whenever it makes sense.
We also want you to know when something needs medical attention rather than chiropractic care.
When to Call Your OB or Midwife
- Leg pain with swelling, redness, or warmth in the calf
- Numbness in the groin or inner thighs, or changes in bladder or bowel control
- Sudden or significant weakness in a leg
- Back pain with fever, bleeding, or contractions
- Severe pain that does not change with position
Those symptoms need prompt medical evaluation.
You Do Not Have to Just Push Through
A lot of moms are told sciatica is simply part of being pregnant.
It is common, but common does not mean you have to endure it. With a few changes at home and gentle, pregnancy-specific care, most moms find real relief and move through the rest of their pregnancy much more comfortably.
We are honored to care for expecting families across North Chili, Chili, Churchville, Spencerport, and the greater Rochester area.
