Red Light Therapy for Plantar Fasciitis and Foot Pain

Published October 25th, 2026 by Camarata Chiropractic

There is a moment every plantar fasciitis sufferer knows.

You swing your legs out of bed, stand up, take your first step, and it feels like stepping on a nail. After a few minutes of hobbling around the kitchen, it eases up. Then you sit down for lunch, stand back up, and it happens all over again.

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain, and one of the most frustrating, because your feet never really get a day off.

What Plantar Fasciitis Is

The plantar fascia is a thick band of connective tissue running along the bottom of your foot, from your heel bone to the base of your toes. It supports your arch and acts like a spring that stores and releases energy with every step.

When it is overloaded, the tissue where it attaches to the heel gets irritated. Over time, it often becomes less of an acute inflammation and more of a degenerative problem, a tissue stuck in a cycle of incomplete repair.

Who Gets It

  • People who stand all day, like nurses, teachers, retail workers, and factory workers
  • Runners and walkers, especially after increasing mileage
  • Adults between 40 and 60
  • People with tight calves or limited ankle mobility
  • Anyone who recently gained weight or started a new activity
  • People who spend a lot of time barefoot on hard floors or wear unsupportive shoes

Where Red Light Therapy Fits

Red Light Therapy, or photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light that interact with your cells, particularly the mitochondria responsible for energy production.

For a stubborn tissue like the plantar fascia, research on photobiomodulation has explored effects on:

  • Inflammation, helping the tissue move out of a chronically irritated state
  • Circulation, which supports repair in tissue that does not get a lot of blood flow
  • Cellular energy for the cells responsible for rebuilding collagen
  • Pain, with several studies on plantar fasciitis reporting improvements

Our Trifecta Pro 450 delivers four wavelengths, 630nm, 660nm, 850nm, and 940nm, to your entire body in about 12 minutes. The light surrounds you from above and below, so the bottoms of your feet are treated along with your calves, knees, hips, and back.

That full-body coverage matters for foot pain, because tight calves and stiff ankles are some of the biggest contributors to plantar fasciitis.

A Complete Plantar Fasciitis Plan

Red Light Therapy is one helpful tool. Plantar fasciitis responds best when you attack it from several angles:

  • Calf flexibility and strength. Tight calves pull on the heel and increase strain on the fascia.
  • Foot strength. Toe curls, towel scrunches, short-foot exercises, and heel raises build support from within.
  • Loading the fascia. Slow heel raises with your toes elevated on a rolled towel are a well-supported exercise for plantar fasciitis.
  • Chiropractic care for the foot, ankle, knee, hip, and pelvis, restoring motion so the foot is not taking more than its share.
  • Footwear changes. Supportive shoes, especially around the house, can make a big difference.
  • SoftWave Therapy. For stubborn cases, SoftWave is a focused, FDA-cleared option that targets the plantar fascia directly, and it is one of our most common SoftWave treatments.

Simple Things You Can Start Today

  • Before getting out of bed, gently flex and point your feet and stretch your calves for a minute
  • Roll your foot on a frozen water bottle or ball for a few minutes in the evening
  • Wear supportive shoes or slippers instead of going barefoot on hard floors
  • Stretch your calves several times a day
  • Reduce high-impact activities temporarily and swap in biking or swimming
  • Replace worn-out shoes

How Long Does It Take?

Plantar fasciitis can be stubborn. Many cases improve over several weeks to a few months with consistent care, while long-standing cases may take longer. Consistency with exercises and recovery tools makes the biggest difference.

For Red Light Therapy, many people start with three to five sessions per week, then taper as symptoms improve.

When Heel Pain Needs a Closer Look

  • Heel pain after a fall or jump
  • Numbness, tingling, or burning in the foot
  • Swelling, redness, and warmth
  • Pain at night or at rest
  • Pain in both heels along with joint pain elsewhere

Those can point to other causes, such as a stress fracture, nerve irritation, or an inflammatory condition, and deserve evaluation.

Common Questions

Can I use Red Light Therapy and SoftWave for the same foot?

Yes. SoftWave targets the plantar fascia directly, while full-body light supports recovery for the whole leg. Many of our foot pain patients combine them.

Should I wear supportive shoes at home?

For most people with plantar fasciitis, yes. Going barefoot on hard floors is one of the most common reasons morning pain lingers.

Can plantar fasciitis come back?

It can, especially if calf tightness, footwear, or training load are not addressed. Keeping up with calf and foot strength after symptoms settle is the best prevention.

Is heel pain always plantar fasciitis?

No. Heel pain can also come from the Achilles, a stress fracture, nerve irritation, or a fat pad problem, which is why a proper evaluation matters.

Take Back Your First Steps

Plantar fasciitis does not have to dictate how you start every morning. With the right plan, most people get back to walking, running, and standing comfortably.

We help people across North Chili, Chili, Churchville, Spencerport, and greater Rochester get back on their feet, literally.
